Memorial Weekend at the Cabin 2012

It was our 4th annual Memorial Day Weekend at the Cabin.

A few times a year, the timing works out well for my parent’s to take Nate up a little early with them.  They left on Thursday morning – Nate loved it!  He’s definitely a mama’s boy but has no problem waving goodbye to me if it means he gets to go to the cabin sooner.  He’s a born mountain man!  Sam was able to drive up that night after work – Nate loved it.

Papa and Sam took Nate on cabin cars & they did lots of fishing while my mom was in bed feeling miserable.  She got hit with the a mild dose of the flu that day!  Big thanks to Papa and Aunt Sam for entertaining the Naters.

Wes & I enjoyed our time with just Ryan.  He was a great road-tripper . . . here is in gnawing on his Nerds rope . . . the treat he picked at the gas station!

It’s notoriously a little chilly over Memorial weekend but this year it was downright freezing on Saturday – slightly warmer on Sunday – and just about perfect as we drove away on Monday.

This was our first trip up there in a long time so we did our usual activities.

- Lots of riding of the cabin cars.  I rode them a lot. I’ve never been so dusty – my hair was a different color.  And it was so cold that I couldn’t even feel my thumb to push the gas on a ride with Abbie!

- We went fishing.  There is a place called Mystic River that my dad found a few years ago.  A nice man owns it – it’s got a stocked pond where it’s easy to catch a fish.  Papa loves to take the kids here because it’s pretty much a guarantee that they’ll each catch at least one!  My dad’s been learning how to fly fish from the owner of this place – he finally caught a fish in a different pond!  Grandma was nice enough to stay behind while Ryan was napping.

- Every Memorial Weekend, there is a summer kick-off in Duck Creek Village.  A band is there and there’s food and dancing.  The kids always enjoy being on the stage doing a little dancing.  The band is always great with them!  Ryan loved it this year.  He was really getting his moves on.

- My dad loves to take the kids on walks in the forest behind the cabin.  He teaches them about nature as they look for deer.  They rarely find deer on their walks but they always find deer poop!  Ryan picked up a stick and said “fight!”.  He’s a total boy.

- Not far from the cabin is a corral of horses.  We didn’t ride any this trip but we went to say hi and feed them a few times.  It’s a favorite.

These two boys of mine are root beer lovers.  We don’t have it much at our house so they were thrilled when there was a cooler stocked full of it at the cabin!

I was hoping that since it had been a while since Ryan has been anywhere that maybe, just maybe – he would be old enough to sleep somewhat decent on a vacation.  Nope!  He wins the award for worst sleeper.  He was awake or crying for 2 nights in a row.  Seriously kid – and you wonder why you aren’t invited most places? :)

But we love the cabin!  At least during the day we do.

girls trip to Salt Lake

photo (1)

In my old ward – I made some great friends.  And even though most of us have moved out of that ward [sorry Kiley!] – we still keep in touch.

Four of our friends moved to Salt Lake in the last few years so Kiley & I thought it was time to go back up there for a girls weekend.

Saturday was PERFECT.  Megan, Michelle, Nancee, Kiley & I started our girls day at Kneaders for breakfast at 9am.  We basically ate and shopped until 10pm!  We were everywhere from Ikea to Down to Earth @ Gardner Village to Crate and Barrel to City Creek . . . finishing it up with dinner at The Dodo.   Leslie was able to meet up with us that afternoon.  It was just like old times . . . you’d never know it had been a long while since we had all been together.  I sure do miss those girls.

It was a nice get-away!

disneyland

My sisters and I took the big kids on our 2nd annual trip to Disneyland in May.  Going in the middle-of-the-week in May treated us well, again!  [my mom and Wes had a great time with Ryan.]  AND – I bought Nate & I a season pass to Disneyland so we’re going to have a year packed of DISNEYLAND!

I love going with my sisters.  We are all three Disney fans and it makes being there together really fun.  We left on Monday and got to Anaheim right about dinner time so we went straight to Downtown Disney to walk around and eat.  They have a lego store there with disney characters built from legos and a fun lego ramp.  Nate LOVED it.  When my Disney pass expires it may be time for a trip to Lego Land.

We did a 2-day park hopper this year.  What a difference the extra day makes!  We didn’t have to try to cram everything in to one day.  It was really my first visit to California Adventure which was fun. We took time for shows, the parade, rides & to meet characters.  We learned 2 new things on this trip: 1). There are delicious salads at the Pizza Port.  2). There is a magical hour before the park opens on Main Street.  There are characters roaming about and it’s just great.  We were one of the first cars there one morning – we loved it!

The kids LOVED to meet characters this trip.  Aunt Sam made them autograph books and they were a huge hit.

I quickly learned that while Nate is brave at a number of things – rides at Disneyland is not one of them!  Luckily all 3 kiddos were cautious so we mostly all stuck together.

Somehow Nate did really like Splash Mountain. It was the only “big” ride we went on.  At the end of our first ride – he yells “Now I know why it’s called SPLASH Mountain!”  We were soaked.  After Abbie saw her face in this picture, she says “oooh, I’m not looking so well.”

The FERRIS WHEEL is worth documenting.  I am not a huge fan of ferris wheels but I went anyway.  Ali suggested that we try the swinging cars . . . why not?  So we jump in and we’re all doing fine . . . .

UNTIL . . . we start coming down on our final loop and we really started swinging.  Sam and I had Nate in between us and Abbie across from us.  Abbie’s face is sheer terror and Nate is bawling next us saying some of the funniest things I’d heard all day.  At that point – all we could do was laugh.  Which actually made Abbie laugh and like the ride but Nate is not a fan of the Mickey Ferris Wheel.  At all.

He IS a fan of Autopia, though.
